This Can Be Your Last Time in Detox

Detox is not fun. You will likely experience anxiety, nausea, sweating, shaking, and cravings. Or it could be worse. You might have bad withdrawal, which could include fever, confusion, diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, or hallucinations. You may lie in bed totally miserable and think that if you could just use again, all this would stop. It’s true; the symptoms would stop–for now. Then, in a month or a year, whenever life gets bad enough for you to try to quit again, you have to go through detox again. At that point, withdrawal won’t be any easier and it might be worse.

The good news is that this detox can be your last. This is the worst part. Depending on what you’re detoxing from, after about three to five days, and possibly sooner, you will feel as bad as you’re ever going to feel in recovery. After a certain point, every day will get a little easier. There will be ups and downs, of course, days when you feel like you might relapse, but the pain of withdrawal will be behind you.

If you can persevere when you feel completely terrible and you know that using will make the pain stop, then you can persevere when the pain is gone and you only have to deal with cravings and stress. You will have proven to yourself that you don’t have to use again. Detox is the only time your body physically needs the drug to function normally, which is why you feel terrible. After that, you only want the drug, and you can remind yourself of that, even if your mind tries to trick you.

The middle of detox, when you feel awful and just want to give up and try again later, is as good a time as any to start practicing for the rest of recovery. No matter how bad it gets, you can remind yourself it will get better in a matter of days. You won’t feel bad forever. There’s no possible way for you to feel as bad in a week as you do today. All you have to do is get through today. Just get through this hour, if that’s what you need to do. This is a valuable skill for the rest of recovery. If you do the things you need to do every day, you can’t fail to get better in the long run. Just as your withdrawal symptoms were temporary, your cravings will be temporary. Just remind yourself what you have already been through and how far you’ve already come.
