Should I Get Treatment Near Home or Farther Away?

There are many factors to consider when choosing a facility for detox and treatment–treatment approach, quality of staff, comfort of facilities, post-treatment support, and financial options are among the most important. One factor that could make a difference is how far away the treatment center is. Often on shows such as Intervention or Dr. Phil, people who agree to treatment are immediately flown off to a treatment center in some other state. This often works out fine. Whether it works for you depends on your circumstances.

The first major consideration is whether you will be attending an inpatient or outpatient program. If you are attending an inpatient program, you could really do either, since you stay in the facility. If you are doing outpatient treatment, you obviously don’t want to be too far from the treatment center. You will have to make frequent visits to the center and a long commute will take a lot of time out of your day.

Choosing a treatment center farther away has two main advantages. The first is you have more privacy. That is, if you feel the need to protect your reputation and you are afraid your career would suffer if it were widely known you sought treatment for addiction, then finding a center in another state might be the way to go. Or you might feel that running into someone you know would make the process harder for you. Either way, if you would rather disappear for a while to get treatment, far away is better.

The other main advantage is that you can get away from everything associated with your addiction. You have some time away from old friends, familiar haunts, and anything else that might trigger cravings. A clean break can also make it easier to adopt new habits and shed some old ones. You have a complete change of context.

The biggest advantage of choosing a local treatment center is that the transition back home after treatment can be a little easier. Your family doesn’t have to travel to visit you, so they can be more involved in your treatment and better support you when you come home. That assumes, of course, that your family is supportive and will be an asset in recovery. The change of context that can be helpful at the beginning of treatment might be disruptive after treatment and that transition might be smoother if you stay in the same general area. Also, if you go for a local treatment center, you can make better use of their follow-up care.
