How Spring Cleaning Can Declutter Your Life

Your immediate environment affects how you feel. If your place is a bit cluttered or messy, even if you’re used to it, you might feel slightly oppressed by it. Giving the place a good cleaning can help you feel better in a number of ways.

First, it’s a good way to get rid of any reminders of your addiction. You, a friend, or a family member have probably already gotten rid of any drugs and paraphernalia in your house, but there may still be some lingering reminders. Maybe there’s a smell of smoke or incense that reminds you of using, or maybe you’re the kind of person who makes a little nest around where you normally sit. If there is a spot in your house that looks a little too much like a rut, you might want to clean it up or rearrange things a bit to make finding a new pattern easier.

Second, it’s a good way to exert some control over your life. Sometimes you have thoughts and emotions clashing in your head and life feels out of control in a dozen different ways. You might feel like you have very little control over your mood or outside circumstances, but you can clean up a bit and make the environment around you a little better. It’s also a way to practice small acts of self-discipline. You don’t have to fix everything in your life, but maybe you can wash the dishes, even if you don’t feel like it. You can build on those small wins, and actually doing something is much better than ruminating.

Third, you’ll feel better in a cleaner environment. This is both physical and psychological. If you throw out some junk, put some stuff away, and generally declutter, you immediately feel freer. There’s space to move and breathe. Too much stuff around gets in your way. You trip over and feel burdened by it. Straightening up a bit just makes you feel a little better. On the physical level, a cleaner environment is healthier. It’s not healthy to have a box of pizza crusts sitting under your bed for a month. Or maybe you have a cat that sheds. You’ll feel better if you’re not breathing cat hair all the time.

Cleaning out your living space can be symbolic. You can get rid of old associations along with your old junk. Open your windows, get some fresh air and make a new start with a cleaner place.
