Addictive Shows to Watch as You Get Over Your Addiction

Right now is the best time ever for TV. By any measure–quality, variety, convenience–TV has never been better than it is now. Since you will probably have some downtime during detox and treatment, you might want to catch up on some of the shows people keep telling you you have to watch. With so many possibilities, how do you choose?

Obviously, it largely depends on what you like. You don’t want to sit through hours of a show you think is stupid. There may be other considerations than just personal preference though. Just because a show is good and you will probably like it, doesn’t necessarily mean you spend hours watching it during recovery.

Consider three of the most critically acclaimed shows ever–The Sopranos, The Wire, and Breaking Bad. None of these is a good show to watch during recovery. They are all about drinking and drug use and they are all a bit depressing. If the scenes of drinking and drug use don’t trigger you, you are likely to finish a lot of episodes feeling stressed and despondent, which is exactly opposite of what you want.

One of the reasons TV is so good lately is that many shows can explore complex and sometimes disturbing themes that would have never been allowed on network TV. Even an animated comedy–say, one about a narcissistic horse-man or a boy’s adventures with his eccentric grandfather–can suddenly kick you in the gut. It’s not the kind of stuff you want to expose yourself to if you want to feel better about life.

Instead, you may want to go old-school. The big networks had–and have–one goal in their programming, which is to keep you happy between commercials. They figure you’ve had a long day of dealing with real-life problems and the last thing you want from TV is more of the same. They want to stay away from anything disturbing, controversial, or depressing. Coincidentally, you also want to stay away from those things while you’re in treatment and the early stages of recovery.

Although network TV is mostly terrible, there are some gems. Try to find shows that are prosocial, inspiring, or funny. Stay away from shows that prominently feature drugs or alcohol. Here are a few ideas to get your started.
