5 Ways To Build Confidence In Your Recovery

When someone takes the step of walking into a detox facility, their self confidence is likely to be at an all-time low.  They feel guilty that their life is turned upside down. Guilt, shame, disappointment and even feelings of grief are common in the early stages of recovery.

It’s important to build self confidence in those early stages. Confidence is feeling as if you’re capable of something. Have you ever felt completely confident in your job, or at home? Feels good, right? That’s why it’s vital to rebuild that feeling, which can be damaged through years of substance abuse; you have to feel like you can succeed in your recovery.

Here are some easy ways to begin to boost your confidence:

  1. Find one thing you know you can do: if all you can accomplish is making your bed really well, do that. Doing something you’re comfortable with that’s beneficial will give you the feeling of accomplishment.
  2. Be honest with yourself: If you’re having a low day, acknowledge it, and find a way to improve it. Give yourself permission to have an off day, then move on from it. By accepting how you’re feeling and turning it around, you’re controlling your day in a positive way.
  3. Do something for someone else: Impact someone else’s day for the better. Hold the door open, smile and say hello to someone new, anything that’s for someone else. You may very well be the only positivity they encounter that day, and doing something kind for another will boost your confidence in a great way.
  4. Recite a positive affirmation: Train your brain to think positive. Your affirmation can be a positive word, or an upbeat statement you repeat to yourself outloud. Saying them aloud gives them power, helping you to embrace what your affirmation is encouraging.
  5. Stay active: Yoga, running and swimming are popular activities that can be soothing. Exercise releases endorphins, nature’s own way of helping you relax and feel better. Physical activity of any kind helps boost your self esteem, but the accomplished feeling after a run or a swim will give your confidence a natural boost that’s as good for you physically as it is mentally.

By focusing on positive things, you encourage positivity in your life, helping your confidence grow. The key is to take action. Be active in your own confidence and your confidence will build instantaneously.
